WHAT IS LIFESTYLE COACHING?

Lifestyle Coaching is a combination of energy, health, performance, and life coaching, which is why it's called "lifestyle" coaching. Only changing, improving, and optimizing the way you live as a whole can deliver on all of that.

That said, before I can fully answer "What is lifestyle coaching?" more precisely, and what it will do for you, we have to define Lifestyle. We also have to explain where lifestyle coaching starts; ironically, it's not with Coaching.

Simply put, you have a life; now you want to establish a style of living, that is if you're going to accomplish and achieve what you are here to do with your health and wellbeing intact.

People naturally wake up to be successful every day. They/you don't wake up to be balanced or healthy or seek "peace of mind." We all want these qualities of life, but we need to realize that we don't wake up to achieve those qualities of life; they are by-products of how we achieve our goals.

We wake up to accomplish things, from the moment we pull the covers off to brushing our teeth, to completing tasks at work so that ultimately we can achieve our goals, fulfill our missions, and realize the vision that we eventually get clear on for our lives.

Goals? They're in life—your family, career, business, sport, or creative pursuits. These are things that you are "up to," that are "out there," that take energy, time, effort, and sometimes weeks, months, or years to achieve.

Your Lifestyle is then how you (not necessary how to) achieve your goals; even though aspects of your Lifestyle are, as well, the foundation of how to—which is industry-specific.

Your Lifestyle is your master strategy for living a fully engaged and fulfilling life and should ensure you have the energy, health, and performance capacities you need to succeed.

Beyond that, and depending on how successful you are, your Lifestyle then takes on all kinds of additional attributes. Such as, what you can afford, wear, get involved in, travel to, and various other preferences and ways of life that all factor into your quality of life.

Unfortunately, that's not what we learn early on. We understand some of what we need to achieve our goals, but we are rarely taught much about how to live for the energy, health, and performance levels that enable us to respond and sustain the process.

We are taught that when we achieve our goals and succeed, we can live a better lifestyle, in terms of those qualities of life factors just mentioned. In other words, it's an economic or materialistic definition of Lifestyle, but not the one that matters most.

What derails people from achieving success more than anything else? It's human performance issues such as the lack of clarity, constant tiredness, and fatigue. Also, low stamina and endurance, inadequate sleep and recovery, and ultimately insufficient rejuvenation distract and hold us back, among other hidden lifestyle challenges.

The only way to solve those factors, among several others, is changing, improving, and optimizing the way you live.

Many of us do learn early on that we need to eat healthier (nutrition) and workout (fitness), and maybe the importance of sleep (not the habits). Yet, rarely does any of it stick for most people because they don't have the overall lifestyle skills to sustain.

And that's the game-changer—it's all the essential lifestyle skills that make optimal living possible, working together that make it work.

Yet, when it comes to wanting things to change, we have several industries that will step in and keep you caught up for years on end, potentially without ever solving your real problem or learning the lifestyle fundamentals.

For example:

The self-help industry focuses mainly on personal and professional development great. Still, it is mostly divorced from spiritual growth, health, and the majority of lifestyle factors that enable you to perform well.

The health and wellness industry will focus you on detoxes, diets, weight loss, and fitness challenges excellent; but don't necessarily deal with the causes of a toxic body, weight gain, and deconditioning in the first place.

They focus mainly on external solutions to what is a lifestyle problem.

Consequently, we end up making goals out of aspects of our Lifestyle that are not real goals. Fitness challenges notwithstanding, healthy eating and being active are not goals, even if you've gotten sedentary and sick.

Performance training (outside of sports) and the leadership coaching industry emphasizes, too, mostly one aspect of Lifestyle—psychology.

These industries may touch on fitness, nutrition, and sleep from time to time but don't focus much on the underlying Lifestyle that enables one to be energetic, healthy, and high performing.

That requires a whole lifestyle, and no one aspect of Lifestyle can fill that shoe. i.e., sleep, nutrition, or fitness...

And that's where the lifestyle coaching industry becomes relevant, meaningful, and actionable. It's a new field that connects the dots on the fundamentals of successful living so that you can achieve even your most ambitious goals while living in balance with vibrant health and peace of mind.

Lifestyle Coaches should be coaching to help the client establish a lifestyle based on the fundamentals—and helping them get so proficient in the principles and practices of an overall lifestyle strategy that will help them achieve their most ambitious goals.

This integrated Lifestyle is becoming known as a Performance Lifestyle or "high-performance lifestyle." Living a lifestyle free of hidden lifestyle challenges reveals what it means to "live in balance," overtaking single-dimensional ideas like work-life balance.

Lifestyles based on one or two aspects of Lifestyle are useful and help people improve but are woefully inadequate for navigating today's modern-day performance culture.

At this time, what passes for "lifestyle coaching" in the market is not much more than traditional Coaching, or health coaching, with a new name, focused on the known aspects of Lifestyle like healthy eating, getting fit, and thinking positive, along with a growing emphasis on getting enough sleep. But that's not the whole of what lifestyle coaching is all about.

The true essence of lifestyle coaching is helping a human perform better and, ultimately, living "like a pro," not an amateur who does not understand the fundamentals.

It's about optimizing your human performance, and performance is a lifestyle, even if it includes the use of high tech, quantified self, supplements, and other high-performance lifestyle solutions available today.

I got that insight early on as a worn-down, in-the-game entrepreneur who kept hitting the wall and realizing that despite being an expert at nutrition and fitness, I needed to make more and more lifestyle changes to function amidst all the stress and demands on my life.

At some point, I discovered that eating healthier and exercising and getting that 6-7 hours of sleep, and even thinking positive are not quite the full answer.

Navigating a world where we have access to more information and opportunity to achieve our goals than at any other time in history and seemingly faster than ever has created a dilemma. The busier we get, the less time we have to take care of ourselves, our bodies, and our lives.

It's the resulting downward spiral that results in distracting and holding most people back from unlocking and unleashing their full potential.

So a lifestyle coach who is competent in human performance will inspire a broader understanding of Lifestyle, with a full range of capacities to help a client change, improve and optimize the way they approach the achievement of their goals.

Without that clarity of vision—the drive, the motivation, and purpose one needs to live optimally in a world that is continuously selling you short with all kinds of ways to cope with stress in ways that create more stress can get easily covered up.

So, having a lifestyle coach can genuinely transform your life by essentially helping with three functions.

  1.  RESOLVE the aspects of your Lifestyle that are distracting and holding you back from living at your full potential.
  1.  EVOLVE with a new lifestyle mindset and skillsets that ground your willingness to change and drives for success with an approach you can believe.
  1.  ACHIEVE even your most ambitious life, career, or business goals while living in balance with vibrant health and peace of mind.

As a Lifestyle Coach, I am committed to all of that. I help you understand what your Lifestyle is like, identify what changes you need to make, and why and ultimately optimize how you live to get the results you want to achieve.

I can then take you on the path of moving away from the typical Lifestyle and carry you through fitness and healthy lifestyle concepts to go the distance towards what will enable you to live a healthy lifestyle successfully as a minimum. And that is, establishing a balanced and healthy Performance Lifestyle, or a High-Performance Lifestyle, pending how much of your greatness you want to realize and actualize.

And while you might only want to get proficient at getting your eating, exercise, and sleep dialed in, it's essential to know what's possible from the start so that you can start developing a performance lifestyle you can call your own.

Think of learning self-defense. When you walk into a dojo, don't you want to know what it takes to become a black belt and be taught by one, so you know what's possible?

Of course, even if you don't go the distance, you want to know that whatever you learn is on the path towards something more significant.

I have over 30 years of experience on that path. I have identified all the essentials aspects of health and high performance and the Lifestyle that makes it all possible, starting with energy.

Energy is the driving force in your life, and it's also "the rudder of your lifestyle," the primary determinant for how far, high, and for how long you'll go in this life.

When you wake to what you are and learn how to manage your energy, you will have dialed in your Lifestyle's two cornerstones and the keys to optimal human performance.

Learning how that changes everything, and if you can get them right, you can get everything else.

Lifestyle coaching, without a core emphasis on energy and its management, misses the main points.

That's why Lifestyle Coaching Always Starts With Training.
